The van MOT checks the same safety areas as a car test: brakes, lights, steering, suspension, tyres and wheels, seat belts, the body and structure, the exhaust and emissions, mirrors, wipers and the horn. Vans work harder than cars, so we often find worn brakes, tired suspension bushes, broken springs and corrosion on the underside. We explain any failure or advisory in plain words and show you what we found.
We know a van off the road is a van not earning. If your van fails, we give you a clear quote and only start repairs once you agree. Many vans can have the repairs done here and be retested without leaving the site. We can usually do a service in the same visit too, so you lose the van once rather than twice. Please empty or secure the load area before you bring it in.

- When is my van's MOT due?
- A van needs its first MOT when it is three years old, then every 12 months. You can have the test up to a month, minus a day, before the expiry date and keep the same renewal date. You can check your van's MOT due date for free on the GOV.UK website using the registration.
- Do I need to empty my van for the MOT?
- You do not need to strip out racking or ply-lining, but please take out loose tools and stock or make sure they are secure. The tester needs to see inside the load area and check the structure, and a tester can refuse to test a van if the load makes it unsafe or blocks the checks.
- What happens if my van fails?
- We show you what failed and explain it in plain words, then give you a clear quote for the repairs. Nothing is started until you agree. If the van has a dangerous defect it should not be driven until it is fixed. Many repairs can be done here and the van retested without leaving the site.
- Can I book a van MOT and service at the same time?
- Yes, and for a working van it is usually the best option. We can carry out the service and the MOT in the same visit, so the van is off the road once instead of twice. Any small items the service turns up can be sorted before the test.
- Can I drive my van with an MOT advisory?
- Yes. An advisory means something is wearing but is not yet bad enough to fail. We explain each one honestly and tell you how soon it is likely to need doing, so you can plan the cost around your work. We do not pressure anyone into repairs on advisories.
- Can I drive my van if the MOT has run out?
- Only to a booked MOT test or to a booked repair needed to pass. Otherwise it is illegal to drive a van without a valid MOT, and your insurance may not cover you. If yours has run out, call us and we will book it in.
