Van MOT Guide: What Ford Transit and Sprinter Owners Need to Know Before Booking

Class 4 vs Class 7 MOT — what is the difference
Most cars take a Class 4 MOT, which covers vehicles with up to 8 passenger seats. Vans and light commercial vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight take a Class 7 MOT. The inspection covers the same core safety systems — brakes, lights, steering, suspension, tyres, and emissions — but Class 7 testing includes additional checks for load-carrying components and commercial vehicle-specific items.
Ford Transit, Ford Transit Custom, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Transporter, Renault Trafic, and similar vans typically require a Class 7 MOT. Some smaller vans based on car platforms fall into Class 4. We confirm which class applies to your vehicle when you book — never assume it is the same as a car.
Why vans fail MOTs — the most common reasons
Brake fade and worn brake pads are a leading cause of van MOT failures. Vans carry heavier loads than cars, and braking systems work harder as a result. A van that passes with marginal pads in June may fail in October if it has been doing heavy loads over summer. We measure brake pad and disc thickness at every service to keep on top of this.
Lights are a very common failure point on working vans. A reversing light or indicator bulb that has blown goes unnoticed because drivers do not routinely check the rear of the vehicle. Exhaust emissions and tyre condition are also common failure points, particularly on older Transits and Sprinters that are kept in service beyond what the maintenance schedule demands.
How to prepare your van for its MOT
Walk around the van before it comes in and check all exterior lights — indicators, brake lights, reversing light, and number plate light. Check tyre tread depth across the full width of each tyre, not just the centre. Make sure the windscreen is free of cracks in the swept area and that the wipers are clearing properly.
If your van is overdue a service, booking the service at the same time as the MOT makes sense. We can carry out both on the same visit, and we will flag any items likely to cause an MOT fail during the service checks. Call us on 07494 990846 to discuss your van and we will advise the most efficient way to get everything done.
