Timing Chain Replacement

We diagnose chain stretch with live cam timing data before recommending strip-down — and carry out full kit replacements across BMW, VW, Audi, Ford, and Jaguar engines at our Brierley Hill workshop.

Timing Chain Replacement with clear advice.

A timing chain rattle on cold start is one of the most misunderstood symptoms in the industry. The noise comes from the chain slapping against its guide as oil pressure builds — and for many drivers it disappears within 30 seconds of starting, so they assume it is not serious. It is. Chain stretch causes progressive timing errors, increased fuel consumption, rough running at idle, and in advanced cases, camshaft correlation fault codes that send the car into limp mode.

Before recommending a timing chain replacement, we read live cam timing data from the engine management system. On BMW N47 and N57 diesels, VW and Audi 2.0 TDI engines, Ford EcoBoost 1.0 turbos, and Jaguar Ingenium diesels — the engines we see most often for chain work — this data tells us whether the chain has stretched beyond tolerance, whether the tensioner has failed to maintain correct tension, or whether the plastic guides are worn. That distinction matters: a failed tensioner on an otherwise good chain is a different (cheaper) job to a stretched chain requiring full kit replacement.

We carry out timing chain work to manufacturer torque specifications. Kit replacement means chain, tensioner, guides, and sprockets replaced as a complete set — fitting a new chain on old tensioners or guides is a false economy that results in rapid re-failure. We always change oil and filter at the time of the job, because old oil contamination in the tensioner feed is one of the primary causes of premature chain wear on these engines.

Common timing chain problem engines we work on regularly: BMW N47 diesel (1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X-series 2007–2015), BMW N57 diesel (3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X5 2008 onwards), VW/Audi 2.0 TDI chain-driven variants, Ford EcoBoost 1.0 (Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport), Jaguar/Land Rover Ingenium 2.0 diesel, Vauxhall 1.6 CDTi. If your car is not on this list, call us — we assess each case on its own merits.

Live data assessment first

Cam timing values and tensioner live data read before committing to any strip — we confirm the diagnosis before quoting the job.

Full kit replacement

Chain, tensioners, guides, and sprockets replaced together. No mixing new chain with worn guides.

BMW N47 specialists

The N47 diesel is the highest-volume timing chain job in the workshop — we know this engine in detail.

What timing chain work involves

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Cold start assessment and live cam timing data read to confirm chain stretch or tensioner failure.
  • Fault code scan for P0016/P0017/P0018/P0019 cam correlation codes and related faults.
  • Full timing chain kit replacement: chain, upper and lower tensioners, chain guides, and camshaft/crankshaft sprockets.
  • Oil and filter change at time of job — contaminated oil is a primary cause of tensioner failure.
  • Reassembly to manufacturer torque specifications; cam timing verified before starting.
  • Post-work cold start check and run-up to confirm rattle is resolved.

Common questions

What does a timing chain rattle on cold start mean?
Cold start rattle that fades as the engine warms is the classic symptom of chain stretch or a failing hydraulic tensioner. As the engine cools overnight, oil drains from the tensioner. On start, the chain is temporarily loose until oil pressure builds and re-tensions it. The noise is the stretched chain slapping against its plastic guide. Left untreated, this progresses to stored fault codes, rough running, and eventually catastrophic engine damage.
How much does a timing chain replacement cost?
Timing chain replacement cost varies significantly by engine. On a BMW N47 diesel the job typically costs £800–£1,400 in labour and parts at an independent specialist — compared to £2,000–£3,000+ at a main dealer. VW 2.0 TDI and Ford EcoBoost chains are generally less involved and cost less. Call or book online with your registration and we will give you an accurate quote for your specific engine.
Is the timing chain covered by warranty?
For vehicles still within manufacturer warranty, timing chain failures on known-problem engines (particularly BMW N47) have been subject to goodwill claims. For out-of-warranty cars, the cost falls to the owner. We advise on the most cost-effective approach for your specific vehicle and age, and use quality timing chain kits — not budget parts that fail prematurely.
Can I keep driving with a timing chain rattle?
No. A rattle on cold start should be investigated promptly. Chain stretch does not stabilise — it worsens with every cold start cycle. The risk is the chain jumping a tooth or breaking, which on most modern engines causes piston-to-valve contact and destroys the engine. The repair cost of a broken chain is many times the cost of a planned replacement.
Does the BMW N47 commonly have timing chain problems?
Yes — the N47 four-cylinder diesel fitted to BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, and 5 Series from 2007 to around 2015 has a well-documented timing chain weakness. The chain is driven from the rear of the engine (an unusual design), which makes replacement a significant job. We carry out N47 timing chain replacements regularly at our Brierley Hill workshop and are thoroughly familiar with the procedure.
Does the VW or Audi 2.0 TDI have a timing chain or timing belt?
Some variants of the 2.0 TDI (EA189 and EA288 generation) use a timing chain rather than a belt. Chain-driven 2.0 TDI engines can develop similar stretch and tensioner issues to the BMW N47, particularly on higher-mileage examples. We confirm which applies to your specific engine code before any work is quoted.
