Ford PATS Programming
We carry out Ford PATS programming using Ford IDS — adding new keys, resolving lost key situations, and reprogramming after ECU or instrument cluster replacement on all Ford models.
Why book with us
Ford PATS Programming with clear advice.
PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) is Ford's factory immobiliser, fitted to Ford cars and vans from the late 1990s onwards. The system works by storing encrypted transponder codes from authorised keys in the PATS module (which may be integrated into the instrument cluster, the PCM/ECU, or a standalone PATS transceiver depending on generation). When a key is inserted and turned, the PATS module reads the transponder chip in the key — if it is not recognised, the engine will not start, even if the mechanical key turns freely.
PATS programming is required in several situations: when a spare key is needed and the owner does not have a dealer-level tool, when all keys have been lost and the PATS system needs to be reset to accept new keys, when the PCM/ECU has been replaced (new ECU must be paired to the existing PATS module and keys), or when the instrument cluster has been replaced on vehicles where PATS is cluster-integrated.
We use Ford IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) — the official Ford dealer tool — to carry out PATS programming. Aftermarket key programming tools exist but cannot perform the full scope of PATS work, particularly PCM replacement coding and the security access procedures required after total key loss. Ford IDS allows us to carry out the complete range of PATS procedures on all Ford passenger cars and commercial vans.

Ford PATS programming covers
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Adding a new spare key to an existing working PATS system.
- Total key loss procedure — security access, PATS module reset, and new key programming.
- PCM/ECU replacement — programming new PCM to accept the vehicle's existing PATS keys.
- Instrument cluster replacement where PATS data is stored in the cluster.
- PATS fault code diagnosis — identifying whether the fault is transponder, wiring, or module.

Common questions
- My Ford has the wrong key or no key — can you programme a new one?
- Yes. If you have at least one working key, adding a second is a straightforward PATS programming procedure. If all keys are lost, a total key loss procedure is required — this involves security access via Ford IDS to reset the PATS system before new keys can be programmed. Both procedures require the physical key to be cut to the correct profile for the lock, which we also arrange.
- Do I need to go to a Ford dealer for key programming?
- No. We use Ford IDS — the same diagnostic tool used by authorised Ford dealers — to carry out PATS programming. The outcome is identical to a main dealer programming procedure. Independent specialists with the correct tooling can carry out all Ford PATS work at typically lower cost than a dealer.
- My Ford will not start — could it be a PATS fault?
- Possibly. A PATS fault prevents the engine from starting even if the mechanical key turns the ignition. Signs of a PATS fault include the immobiliser warning light (padlock symbol) remaining on after the key is turned, or a security fault code stored in the PATS or PCM module. We diagnose PATS faults with Ford IDS before advising the correct repair.
