Mercedes Xentry Diagnosis & Programming
We use Mercedes-Benz Xentry — the official Mercedes diagnosis and programming system — for full module fault diagnosis, SCN coding, software updates, and control unit programming on all Mercedes-Benz and Sprinter models.
Why book with us
Mercedes Xentry Diagnosis & Programming with clear advice.
Mercedes-Benz Xentry (formerly known as Star Diagnosis) is the manufacturer-native diagnostic and programming platform for all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, AMG models, and Sprinter commercial vans. It replaces the older Star Diagnosis DAS system and provides full access to every control unit on Mercedes vehicles from approximately 2004 onwards. Generic OBD tools provide access to powertrain fault codes on Mercedes — Xentry provides access to everything: airbag, ESP, SAM units, COMAND, door control units, and the full programming and coding layer that generic tools cannot reach.
Xentry is required for: SCN (Software Calibration Number) coding — a mandatory Mercedes process when a control unit is replaced, which links the replacement unit to the car's VIN and prevents unauthorised parts from being fitted; manufacturer software updates applied from Mercedes' live release database; variant coding when options are changed or a control unit replacement requires feature configuration; guided symptom diagnosis using Mercedes' own fault-finding trees; and EGS (automatic gearbox) adaptation resets after transmission work.
We carry out Xentry-based work on the full Mercedes-Benz range: A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS, CLA, CLS, SLK/SLC, SL, AMG models, and Sprinter (W906, W907). If your Mercedes has fault codes that a generic scanner cannot read or clear, or you have been told work requires Xentry access, we are equipped to carry it out at our Brierley Hill workshop.
SCN coding capability
Control unit replacements coded to Mercedes specification via SCN — mandatory for most module replacements.
Full Sprinter support
Mercedes Sprinter W906 and W907 commercial vans fully supported alongside all passenger car ranges.
Live software updates
Manufacturer software updates applied from Mercedes' live Xentry release database — not offline versions.

Mercedes Xentry work covers
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Full multi-module fault diagnosis across all control units — not just engine and gearbox.
- SCN coding for replacement control units (mandatory Mercedes procedure, requires live server access).
- Manufacturer software updates applied from Mercedes' live Xentry release database.
- Variant coding when fitment or option configuration changes after a module replacement.
- Guided fault finding using Mercedes' own symptom and fault diagnosis routines.
- EGS gearbox adaptation reset after transmission fluid change or mechanical work.

Common questions
- What is SCN coding on a Mercedes?
- SCN (Software Calibration Number) coding is a mandatory Mercedes-Benz process that must be carried out when a control unit is replaced. The replacement unit is registered to the vehicle's VIN via the Mercedes server, and the correct software calibration for that specific car is written to the module. A replaced Mercedes control unit that has not been SCN coded will typically either not function or produce persistent fault codes. SCN coding requires live Xentry server access — it cannot be done with offline tools.
- Do I need Xentry for a Mercedes fault diagnosis?
- For engine fault codes, a generic OBD scanner will give you the code number. For anything beyond that — SAM unit faults, airbag codes, ESP calibration, COMAND faults, or any work that requires programming — you need Xentry or an equivalent manufacturer-level tool. Many Mercedes faults (particularly in body control and safety systems) do not communicate over the standard OBD port and require Xentry for complete diagnosis.
- Can you diagnose a Mercedes Sprinter with Xentry?
- Yes. Sprinter (both W906 2006–2018 and W907 2018 onwards) is fully supported by Xentry alongside all Mercedes passenger car models. We carry out Xentry diagnosis and programming on Sprinter vans as well as passenger cars — both the OM651 and OM654 diesel engines and associated transmission and body systems.
- My Mercedes has a fault that a garage could not read — can you diagnose it?
- This is a common situation with Mercedes vehicles. Many Mercedes control units do not communicate over the standard OBD2 protocol and require manufacturer-native access to read. If another garage told you the fault could not be found, Xentry access often resolves this — we regularly diagnose Mercedes faults that generic tools cannot read or provide meaningful information on.
