ECU Replacement

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the primary control module for engine management — it reads sensor data, controls fuelling, ignition timing, variable valve timing, and communicates with other modules on the CAN bus. When an ECU fails, it can cause anything from a no-start condition to misfires, limp mode, or a stored list of fault codes that never clear. But not every apparent ECU fault is a failed unit — and replacing a functioning ECU because the diagnosis stopped at the fault code is a common and expensive mistake.

We carry out ECU diagnosis before recommending replacement. Many ECU fault codes are caused by wiring faults (damaged harness, corroded connector pins, chafed wires), by a failed sensor that is generating corrupt data, or by a software issue that a manufacturer update will resolve. We test the ECU supply voltages, ground paths, and communication with other modules before concluding the unit itself has failed.

When replacement is confirmed, we source and programme the replacement ECU to the vehicle. This includes writing the immobiliser code (so the ECU recognises the car's keys), variant coding (so the ECU knows the correct specification for that car), and adaptation values. An unprogrammed or incorrectly coded ECU will leave the car unable to start, or running with incorrect parameters.
