Differential Servicing
We drain and refill front and rear differentials using the exact manufacturer-specified oil grade and quantity for your vehicle — not a generic substitute.

Differential Servicing with clear advice.
Differential oil is one of the most overlooked fluids on a car. It does not get changed in a standard service, is rarely on a manufacturer's published service schedule, and most drivers never think about it — until a differential fails. Worn or contaminated differential oil degrades the lubricating film on hypoid gear teeth and bearings, causing progressive wear that is expensive to repair and impossible to reverse once it starts.
We see differential wear most commonly on vehicles used for towing, on higher-mileage Land Rovers and Range Rovers, on performance cars with limited-slip differentials, and on vehicles that have covered 60,000 miles or more without a diff oil change. The correct interval varies by vehicle — Land Rover recommends different intervals for front and rear axles on the Defender, for example. We confirm the correct fluid specification and quantity from your vehicle identification before starting.
Vehicles we carry out differential servicing on regularly include Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Freelander, and Range Rover; BMW xDrive models; Toyota Land Cruiser; Mitsubishi Shogun; Audi Quattro; Volkswagen 4Motion models; and performance cars with limited-slip differentials including BMW M cars, Ford Focus RS, and similar.
Correct spec confirmed first
Front and rear axles often take different grades — we verify both from your VIN before starting.

LSD-compatible fluids
Limited-slip differentials need a compatible oil with the correct friction modifier — we specify correctly.

Differential service includes
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Confirmation of correct fluid grade and fill quantity from vehicle identification.
- Front differential drain and refill with manufacturer-specification oil.
- Rear differential drain and refill with manufacturer-specification oil.
- Inspection of differential breathers and drain plugs for condition.
- Post-service check for leaks before handover.

Common questions
- How often should differential oil be changed?
- Most manufacturers recommend differential oil changes every 30,000–60,000 miles, though some list it as "lifetime fluid" — which in practice means a preventative change at 60,000–80,000 miles on most vehicles. Towing, off-road use, and track driving all accelerate degradation. We confirm the correct interval for your specific vehicle.
- What happens if you do not change differential oil?
- Differential oil degrades over time and mileage. Contaminated oil loses its load-bearing film, causing gear tooth wear and bearing failure. Symptoms include whining noises under load, vibration when turning, and eventually gear seizure. Differential rebuild or replacement is substantially more expensive than a preventative oil change.
- Do front and rear differentials take the same oil?
- Not always — on many AWD and 4WD vehicles, front and rear axles use different specifications. On Land Rovers, for example, the front and rear axles may use different viscosities, and limited-slip differentials need oil with a specific friction modifier. We verify both specifications before starting the job.
