VW DSG gearbox service

DSG is the dual-clutch automatic used across Volkswagen, Audi (as S tronic), SEAT and Skoda. There are two common families. The six-speed DQ250 fitted to larger engines like the 2.0 TDI runs its clutches in oil and needs an oil and filter change, typically every 40,000 miles. The seven-speed DQ200 fitted to smaller engines in cars such as the Golf, Polo and A3 uses dry clutches and has a sealed mechatronic unit.

On the six-speed gearbox, skipped oil changes are the most common cause of rough or slow changes. The oil carries away clutch material and heat, and old oil lets the clutches and valve body wear faster. On the seven-speed gearbox, the well-known faults are judder when pulling away, jerky changes in slow traffic, a flashing gear display, and the mechatronic unit losing pressure so the car drops out of drive.

A struggling DSG rarely fixes itself. A mechatronic failure can leave you stranded and a worn clutch pack can damage other parts of the gearbox if driven on. Caught early, many problems come down to an oil service, a clutch adaptation or a single component rather than a replacement gearbox.
