DSG Gearbox Service: Why It Matters and When Yours Is Due

Two different DSG gearboxes

DSG is Volkswagen Group's dual-clutch automatic, called S tronic on Audis. It changes gear very quickly and smoothly and helps fuel economy. The important thing for owners is that there are two main types, and they need looking after differently.

The six-speed DSG, found on larger engines such as the 2.0 TDI, has clutches that run in oil. The seven-speed DSG on smaller engines uses dry clutches and has a separate sealed hydraulic unit. We confirm which one your car has from the registration.

Why the oil change matters on the six-speed

On the six-speed wet-clutch DSG, the gearbox oil cools the clutches and carries away clutch material. Over time it breaks down and gets dirty. The service schedule calls for an oil and filter change, typically every 40,000 miles. It is one of the most commonly skipped items on used cars, often because it is not included in a basic service.

When it is missed, changes become rough or slow, the clutches wear faster and the valve body in the mechatronic unit can suffer. A DSG service costs far less than repairing any of those. If you have bought a used car and cannot see a DSG oil change in the history, it is worth doing.

Seven-speed: watch for the warning signs

The seven-speed DSG does not normally have a routine oil change, but it has well-known weak spots. Judder when pulling away, hesitation in slow traffic, a flashing gear display or the car dropping out of drive are all signs to get it checked.

Many of these problems can be diagnosed from the clutch data stored in the gearbox computer. Sometimes a clutch adaptation is all it needs. Other times the clutch or mechatronic unit needs attention. Getting it checked early keeps the repair smaller.

How driving style affects a DSG

How you drive makes a real difference to clutch life on any DSG, but especially the seven-speed. Creeping in slow traffic, holding the car on a hill with the accelerator instead of the brake, and repeated stop-start manoeuvring all slip the clutches and generate heat. Around the busy junctions of Merry Hill and the A461, that is easy to do without thinking.

Where you can, use the brake to hold the car on slopes and let a small gap open up in traffic rather than inching forwards. It sounds minor, but over tens of thousands of miles it adds up. If the car starts to judder even with gentle driving, that is the time to have the clutch data checked.
