Since Vauxhall became part of the same group as Peugeot and Citroen, many of its petrol cars use the three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech engine. You will find it in the Corsa F from 2019, the Mokka from 2021, the Grandland and the Crossland. Like the Ford EcoBoost, it uses a timing belt that runs in the engine oil rather than a dry belt.
The belt on this engine is known to degrade early, especially with the wrong oil, stretched service intervals or lots of short trips. As it breaks down, particles collect in the oil pickup strainer and restrict oil flow. On this engine the brake vacuum pump is also fed by engine oil, so debris can lead to a low brake assist warning and a heavier pedal as well as oil pressure faults.
Warnings to take seriously include an oil pressure light, a "brake assistance" message, an engine management light or a harder brake pedal. Driving on with a failing belt risks engine damage from oil starvation, and if the belt snaps the valves and pistons collide. The manufacturer has shortened belt change intervals on many of these engines for this reason.
We check the belt's condition through the oil filler where the engine allows, look at the oil for debris and review your service history against the current interval for your engine. If a new belt is needed, we fit the full kit, clean the sump and oil pickup strainer, check the vacuum pump and refill with the approved oil so the new belt lasts.
