Why Timing Belt Replacement Is the One Job You Cannot Afford to Skip

What the timing belt does and why it matters
The timing belt synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft — keeping the pistons and valves working in precise coordination. If that synchronisation breaks down, even briefly, the pistons and valves collide. On an interference engine — which describes the majority of modern petrol and diesel cars — this causes catastrophic internal damage in fractions of a second.
The resulting repair is not a belt replacement. It is an engine rebuild or a replacement engine, costing several thousand pounds. In many cases the cost of the repair exceeds the value of the vehicle. We explain this not to alarm customers, but because it is important context for why we take timing belt intervals seriously.
How intervals work — age and mileage
Manufacturers specify two limits: a mileage limit and an age limit. The belt must be replaced when either limit is reached, whichever comes first. It is common for lower-mileage cars to reach the age limit before the mileage limit. A car that covers 5,000 miles a year on a seven-year interval will have done 35,000 miles when the belt becomes due on age grounds.
We look up the exact schedule for your engine code. There is no universal answer — a Ford Fiesta 1.25 petrol has a different interval to a Volkswagen 1.6 TDI diesel. If your service history is incomplete or you are unsure when the belt was last changed, we advise on the sensible approach based on the car is age and mileage.
The kit: belt, tensioners, and water pump
A timing belt replacement involves more than the belt alone. The tensioner and idler pulleys are part of the same system and run at similar stress levels to the belt. Replacing the belt and leaving an old tensioner is a common cause of premature belt failure. For most engines we replace the complete kit: belt, tensioner, idlers, and often the water pump.
The water pump is included on many engines because it is driven by the timing belt and is accessed during the same strip. Fitting a new pump at the same time as the belt costs a fraction of what it would cost to remove the belt again later to change a pump that has failed. We confirm whether this applies to your engine before quoting.
