Euro 6 Mercedes diesels, badged BlueTEC or with a "d" on the boot, inject AdBlue into the exhaust to cut nitrogen oxide emissions. It is fitted to the C Class, E Class, GLC, Vito and Sprinter among others. When the system detects a problem, it warns the driver and starts a countdown. Once it reaches zero, the engine will not restart until the fault is fixed.
The most common failures are the heater and pump assembly in the AdBlue tank, the level and quality sensor, and the NOx sensors in the exhaust that check the system is working. Crystallised AdBlue can also block the dosing injector. Topping up with the wrong fluid, or fluid that has been stored badly, makes all of this more likely.
Ignoring the warning is not an option because the countdown is built in by law. Some owners are advised to have the system switched off, but that is illegal on a road vehicle and will cause an MOT failure. The right fix is to find the failed part.
We read the fault codes and live data with Mercedes-level diagnostic software, check fluid quality and level, test the heater and pump, and look at NOx sensor readings before and after the catalyst. Where the tank heater and pump has failed, the part is often supplied as a unit with the tank, and we explain the cost before ordering anything. After the repair, we run the system adaptation and clear the countdown.

- What happens when the AdBlue countdown reaches zero?
- The engine will not restart once it has been switched off. It will keep running until then, so plan to get it to us before the count runs out.
- Can I just top up the AdBlue to clear the warning?
- If the fluid is simply low, topping up with fresh AdBlue that meets ISO 22241 may clear it. If the warning stays on after a top-up, there is a fault that needs diagnosing.
- Can the AdBlue system be removed?
- No. Removing or disabling it is illegal on a road vehicle and will fail an MOT. We repair the system properly.
- Do you fix AdBlue faults on Sprinter vans?
- Yes. Sprinters are a regular part of our work and we understand that a van stuck on a countdown is a van losing money.
