Ford fitted the three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost to the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max and Puma from 2012 onwards. Instead of a dry timing belt behind a cover, it uses a toothed belt that sits in the engine oil. It is quiet and efficient when it is looked after, but it is very sensitive to the wrong oil, stretched service intervals and lots of short journeys.
As the belt ages it can swell and start to break up. Small pieces of rubber collect in the oil pump pickup strainer in the sump and restrict the flow of oil. The first sign is often an oil pressure warning or a low oil pressure fault code. If that warning is ignored, the engine can be starved of oil, and if the belt itself snaps the valves and pistons collide. Either way the bill runs into thousands, far more than a planned belt change.
Ford's 2.0 EcoBlue diesel in the Transit and Transit Custom uses a similar belt-in-oil design to drive the oil pump. When that belt fails the oil pressure drops straight away, so an oil pressure light on an EcoBlue van means stop and call us rather than finishing the round.
We start by checking your history, the engine's mileage and age, and the condition of the belt through the inspection point where the engine allows it. If the belt is due or showing wear, we replace it with the full kit, drop the sump to clean the pickup strainer and refill with the exact Ford oil specification. If it is in good order, we tell you so and note when it should next be checked.

- No. Pull over and switch off. Low oil pressure on this engine can mean belt debris is blocking the pickup, and driving on can destroy the engine. Call us and we will advise on getting it to the workshop.

- Yes. The belt is designed around a specific Ford oil specification. The wrong oil can make it swell and break up early, which is why we always fit the correct grade.
