How Often Should a High-Mileage Car Be Serviced? The Honest Answer

Why the annual service interval does not work for everyone

Manufacturers design service intervals to cover the typical driver — someone covering around 10,000 to 12,000 miles per year. For that driver, an annual service with an oil and filter change every 12 months keeps the engine in good condition.

For drivers covering 20,000 or 25,000 miles a year — tradespeople, commuters doing long A-road runs, delivery workers — the annual schedule means the engine oil is significantly older and more degraded by the time it is changed. Oil breaks down over mileage, not just over time. Leaving oil in for 20,000 miles increases wear on internal engine components.

When to consider an interim service

An interim service is designed for drivers covering higher mileage between full annual services. It includes an oil and filter change plus around 25 core safety checks — tyres, brakes, lights, fluids, and steering basics. It keeps engine oil fresh at the halfway point and flags any safety items that have developed since the last full service.

For a car doing 20,000 miles a year, we recommend a full service at 12 months and an interim service at six months or 10,000 miles. The cost of an interim service is significantly less than the repair cost of premature engine wear caused by degraded oil.

What we check when you bring a high-mileage car in

When a high-mileage vehicle comes in for any service, we pay particular attention to timing belt intervals. A car doing 20,000 miles a year reaches an 80,000-mile cambelt interval in four years — well within the age the car is likely to be kept. We check both mileage and age against the manufacturer schedule and flag if the belt is due or close.

We also look at brake wear more carefully on high-mileage vehicles — stop-start urban and A-road driving wears pads and discs faster than steady motorway miles. We measure and record pad thickness and disc depth at every visit so you always know where you stand.
