Audi's turbocharged 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines, part of the EA888 family, were used widely in the A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT. Many engines built from around 2008 to 2012 developed high oil consumption, with some needing a litre every 1,000 miles or less. The main cause is well documented: the piston rings of that period were prone to carbon build-up, so they stop scraping oil from the cylinder walls effectively.
Owners usually notice low oil warnings between services, frequent top-ups, and sometimes blue smoke on start-up. Not every thirsty TFSI has the ring problem, though. A faulty PCV (crankcase breather) valve, turbo seal wear or oil leaks can all look similar, and they are much cheaper to fix.
Running low on oil is the real danger. These engines also use a timing chain, and low or degraded oil speeds up chain and tensioner wear. Oil being burnt also fouls spark plugs and can damage the catalytic converter over time.
We start by checking for leaks and testing the PCV system, then carry out a measured consumption test: we fill the oil to a precise level, you drive normally for a set distance, and we measure what has gone. That tells us whether the rings are the likely cause. Where piston ring replacement is needed, it is an engine-out job with updated parts, and we discuss the cost against the value of the car before anything starts.
