Audi A4 B8 (2008–2015) Common Problems: Oil Use, Diesels and What to Check

Why the B8 A4 is worth understanding
The B8 generation Audi A4, sold from 2008 to 2015 as a saloon and Avant estate, is comfortable, well built and good value second-hand. Many now have high mileages and are on their second or third owners. Knowing the common faults helps you buy a good one or keep yours running well.
The issues we see most are oil consumption on the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrols, EGR and DPF problems on the 2.0 TDI, and gearbox servicing that has been missed.
TFSI petrols: oil consumption
Many 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI engines built from around 2008 to 2012 use far more oil than they should. The main cause is well documented: the piston rings from that period are prone to carbon build-up and stop controlling oil properly. Owners notice low oil warnings between services and frequent top-ups.
Not every thirsty TFSI needs new rings, though. A faulty crankcase breather valve or turbo seal can cause similar symptoms and costs much less. We rule those out first and then run a measured oil consumption test. Keep a close eye on the level in the meantime, because these engines also have a timing chain that does not like low or old oil.
2.0 TDI: EGR, DPF and short journeys
The 2.0 TDI is the most common B8 engine. It is strong and economical, but cars used mainly for short journeys can suffer a clogged EGR valve and a blocked DPF. Warning lights, loss of power and limp mode are the usual signs.
We check live data, pressure sensor readings and the sensor pipes before recommending anything. A forced regeneration or clean often sorts a full DPF. If you do mostly short local trips, a longer steady run every week or two helps the filter clean itself.
Other B8 wear items
Like most cars of this age, B8 A4s need attention to suspension. The multi-link front suspension has several arms and bushes that wear, often showing up as a knock over bumps or vague steering. Replacing them in pairs keeps the car driving as it should, and we check the wheel alignment afterwards.
Quattro models also have front and rear differentials and, on some versions, a centre differential with oils that are rarely changed. If your A4 has four-wheel drive and a high mileage, it is worth asking us to check the drivetrain fluids at the next service.
Gearboxes and buying advice
Automatic B8s may have the multitronic CVT, a torque converter automatic or an S tronic dual-clutch, depending on engine and drive. Each has its own servicing needs, and fluid changes are often skipped. If you cannot see gearbox servicing in the history, it is worth asking us to check what is due.
When buying, look for a full service history, ask about oil use on petrols, and check for warning lights on a cold start. If you already own one and something does not feel right, call us on 07494 990846 or book online. We will diagnose it and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
