VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF repair
The 2.0 TDI is a strong engine, but short journeys clog its EGR valve and DPF with soot. We find out which part is really at fault before recommending a clean or a replacement. Call us to book a diagnostic check.
Why book with us
VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF repair with clear advice.
The Volkswagen Group 2.0 TDI common-rail diesel has been fitted to almost everything VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda have built since 2009, including the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Transporter and Audi A3, A4 and Q5. Two emissions parts cause most of the trouble: the EGR valve, which recirculates exhaust gas to cut emissions, and the diesel particulate filter, which traps soot.
Both suffer on cars and vans used for short local trips. The engine rarely gets hot enough for long enough to burn off soot, so the EGR valve gums up and the DPF fills. Typical signs are an engine management or DPF light, loss of power, flat spots, limp mode and, on vans, regeneration messages that never seem to clear. EGR coolers can also leak coolant, which shows up as a dropping coolant level with no obvious drip.
Ignoring these warnings gets expensive. A blocked DPF that is driven on can overheat or crack, and a sticking EGR valve can lead to heavy carbon build-up in the inlet. Many garages go straight to a new DPF or EGR valve. In our experience, a proper check of sensors, pipes and live data often finds a cheaper cause, such as a split pressure sensor pipe or a faulty temperature sensor.
We read the fault codes, check live readings for soot load, differential pressure and EGR position, and inspect the sensor pipes and wiring. If the DPF is healthy but full, a forced regeneration or clean may be enough. If the EGR valve is sticking, cleaning is sometimes possible, but where it has failed electrically we replace it. We explain what we found and what we recommend before we start.
Live data diagnosis
Soot load, differential pressure and EGR position checked, not just a code read.
Clean or replace, honestly
We only recommend new parts when cleaning or a sensor fix will not do the job.
Cars and vans
Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Transporter and Audi 2.0 TDI models all come through our workshop.
VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF repair
EGR and DPF diagnosis includes
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Fault code read and live data check of the emissions system.
- Inspection of DPF pressure sensor pipes, sensors and wiring.
- EGR valve operation and cooler leak checks.
- Forced regeneration where the DPF is suitable.
- EGR valve or DPF clean or replacement where needed.
- Road test and re-scan to confirm the fault has cleared.

Common questions
- Can a blocked DPF be cleaned instead of replaced?
- Often, yes, if the filter is not cracked or oil-contaminated. A forced regeneration or clean can restore it. We check its condition first so you do not buy a new one unnecessarily.
- Why does my TDI keep going into limp mode?
- Common causes are a blocked DPF, a sticking EGR valve or a faulty pressure sensor. Live data tells us which, which is why we do not guess from a fault code alone.
- Can I stop it happening again?
- A regular run of 20 minutes or more at steady speed helps the DPF clean itself. The right low-ash oil matters too. We will give you advice based on how you use the car.
