Jaguar Land Rover introduced its own four-cylinder Ingenium engines from 2015. The 2.0 diesel is fitted to the Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace, and to the Range Rover Evoque, Velar and Discovery Sport. It uses a timing chain, and a number of these engines have developed chain stretch at moderate mileages.
The signs are a rattle for a few seconds after a cold start, an engine management light, and fault codes relating to camshaft and crankshaft correlation. The Ingenium diesel is also known for rising oil levels on cars used for short trips, as fuel from DPF regenerations dilutes the oil. Diluted oil protects the chain and tensioner less well, and many cases of stretch are linked to it.
A stretched chain will not repair itself. As it gets worse, timing drifts, running and economy suffer, and in the worst case the chain can jump or break and cause serious engine damage. Replacing the chain, guides and tensioner early is far cheaper than dealing with the consequences.

We also check the oil level and condition for fuel dilution.
