Ford PowerShift gearbox repair
PowerShift is Ford's dual-clutch automatic. Judder, jerky changes and "transmission malfunction" messages are the classic signs. Book a road test and diagnostic check and we will tell you what is actually wrong before anything is replaced.
Why book with us
Ford PowerShift gearbox repair with clear advice.
Ford fitted the PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch gearbox to petrol Fiestas, Focuses, C-Maxes and B-Maxes, mostly from around 2011 to 2018. It is an automated manual with two dry clutches rather than a traditional torque converter automatic. Owners typically notice judder when pulling away, hesitation when changing between first and second, or a "transmission malfunction" message on the dash.
The causes vary. The dry clutches can wear or become contaminated with oil from a leaking input shaft seal. The clutch actuator motors that engage each clutch can wear, and the transmission control module can develop faults. Replacing the clutch without checking for a leaking seal or a tired actuator is a common reason the judder comes back within a few months.
Left alone, a juddering PowerShift usually gets worse. Slipping clutches wear faster, and a failing control module can leave the car stuck in neutral. It is worth getting it checked early, while it is still a clutch and seal job rather than a list of parts.
We road test the car with you where possible, read the gearbox computer for stored faults and clutch adaptation values, and inspect for oil contamination. Only then do we quote. Sometimes a clutch relearn and software check is all that is needed. If parts are required, we explain which ones and why, and we carry out the correct adaptation procedure after fitting so it drives smoothly.
Road test and data first
Clutch adaptation values and fault codes read before any parts are ordered.
Seal and actuator checks
We look for the leaks and worn actuators that make a new clutch fail early.
Relearn after repair
Every PowerShift repair finishes with the correct clutch adaptation procedure.

Common questions
- Is judder normal on a PowerShift gearbox?
- A slight difference compared with a conventional automatic is normal, but noticeable judder pulling away is not. It usually means clutch wear, contamination or an adaptation problem.
- Will a software update fix it?
- Sometimes, if the clutches are healthy and the adaptation values are out. If the clutches are contaminated or worn, software alone will not cure it. We check the data first so you do not pay for the wrong fix.
- Can I keep driving with a transmission malfunction message?
- It may still drive, but it can drop into neutral without warning. Avoid busy roads and call us on 07494 990846 to book it in as soon as you can.
