Clicking noise but will not start — likely the battery

A single loud click or rapid clicking when you turn the key usually points to a flat or failing battery. The click is the starter solenoid engaging but not receiving enough current to crank the engine. If jump-starting the car gets it running, the battery either needs charging or replacing.

A battery that recovers fully after a charge and then goes flat again within a few days has a fault. Either the battery itself is failing — common after four to five years — or there is a parasitic electrical drain somewhere in the system. We can test battery health and load capacity in a few minutes and trace electrical drains with specialist equipment if the battery itself tests sound.

Engine cranks normally but will not fire

If the engine turns over normally but the car will not start, the battery is doing its job — the engine is not getting what it needs to ignite. The three things required are fuel, spark (or compression on a diesel), and air in the correct proportions. A failure in any one of these stops the car starting.

Common causes include a failed fuel pump, a flooded engine from repeated start attempts, failing spark plugs on a high-mileage petrol, a blocked fuel filter, or an immobiliser fault where the ECU does not recognise the key. A diagnostic check reads any fault codes stored and narrows down the most likely cause before we start work.

Complete silence — no click, no crank

Complete silence when the key is turned usually means the battery is entirely flat, there is a blown fuse in the starting circuit, or the starter motor itself has failed. Check that the battery terminals are tight and free of corrosion — a loose or corroded terminal can interrupt the circuit entirely and cause the same symptom as a dead battery.
